The last three years have been extremely dynamic for mobile phones and the way they are used all over the world. People are more into smartphones these days and feature phones are almost on their way out of the market. Now with the increasing use of smartphones, it is almost natural that the data access is also on the rise as compared to mere phone calls. Telecom consultant Chetan Sharma just recently came up with a survey in which he found something very interesting if not completely unexpected.

Mobile phones are now being much more used as mini computers rather than just being a device for staying in touch. So many people are benefitting these days from data services, but data revenues were still unable to offset the huge declines in voice revenues! Data revenue last year was around $220 billion, but overall revenues stayed put at around $1.1 trillion. Now we are also seeing that some wireless carriers are making it a requirement to have data features in some non-smartphone devices. This will definitely increase data usage even more!
