Not many people are interested in knowing about the Symbian numbering scheme but in order to understand how everything works it’s important to start understanding. So we are currently at Symbian^1 but chances are that a ^2 isn’t to be expected at all as Nokia will be skipping it altogether, going straight to Symbian^3. It is being heard that Maemo 6 will be arriving later this year with at least one new device running it. So let’s keep our fingers crossed.
Symbian ^3 OS
Better known as Symbian S60 5th edition, Symbian^1 is the OS powering almost all the touch phones from Nokia; right from the Nokia N97 flagship to the entry level Nokia 5230. In line was Symbian ^2 which is going to be skipped as a new and better Symbian^3 is now around the corner.

Symbian^3 is expected to show up later this year, probably in the Q3 of the year 2010. It will be featuring multi-touch gestures and we can’t still figure out whether or not the old devices will be compatible with it. Symbian^4 is also going to show up late 2010 or early 2011; according to the rumours.
Now it’s not all for updates as Maemo 6 is also coming to town; expected in the second half of 2010. But that’s not all; the thing is that there are plans to launch some new “products” based on Maemo 6, which means another mobile phone, which probably means the Nokia N920!; as it has been in rumours for quite some time now.

Nokia also foresees that these new Symbian devices will take over all the old (and outdated) S40 devices by 2011 - 55% vs. 35%! According to another estimate 10% of all shipped devices will consist of Maemo ones!
