A highly intriguing report has just been published by the high-tech industry analyzers from Canalys about the touchscreen and smartphone markets in 2009. Last year more than half of the phones sold all over the world had touchscreens; which surely depicts the way these touchscreens have been gaining popularity lately. But even when literally every other major company is coming out with a touchscreen, Apple still rules, if only with just two devices!
Apple iPhone
Apple came out with the original touchscreen, the iPhone, which started the whole phenomenon. Now it stands at the top position after having sold at least 25 million devices and claiming around 33.1 percent market share. Nokia did give it a good fight though as its sales reached an astounding 22 million units, at a very fast pace. Samsung meanwhile is having a nice time with its touchscreen smartphone sales almost doubled, but it is still behind HTC.

The OS used in most Smartphones is still Symbian, followed by RIM. Apple uses its own OS in the iPhone OS. Android is catching up fast and is going to give Apple’s iPhone OS a tough time. Google OS is fourth in number and sales of Google-powered devices are constantly on the rise. Contrary to the popular belief, WinMo powered devices’ sales were reduced last year.

There were a lot of noteworthy things mentioned in this report like most smartphones feature Wi-Fi (84%), GPS (83%) and built-in keyboards (43%).
