3G encryption broken tooJanuary 15th, 2010 - 11:54 pm by Wajiha H.
You must be aware of that little encryption incident that took place where the GSM encryption was hacked by a certain person. Well it seems that even the 3G encryption is not safe now as it too has been broken recently. When the GSm encryption was broken it was mentioned that since the transition to 3G networks is taking place which have more secure encryption algorithm, breaking of the GSM encryption did not quite matter.
![]() Why is this now becoming a problem? Many people must be wondering about this. Well because the original algorithm intended for UMTS, called MISTY1, was extremely computer intensive due to which it was replaced by a revised version called KASUMI which though easier, was touted as being as secure as the original thing; if not more. But as we can see now this has eventually resulted in the breaking of firstly the GSM encryption and now the 3G one. Something must be wrong as it turns out an attack on the algorithm takes just several hours on a regular computer to break the encryption. Though the people who have breached the encryption are saying that their implementation wasn't optimized, due to which some improvement is possible. There is one good news though; this attack is of no use on the original MISTY1 encryption but that is not a possible solution unless and until it’s decided that it’s going to be used from now on.
