Not a lot of interest is being shown in smart phones running Google's Android software these days by the buyers, as many of them do not have any idea as to what they are. Research group IDC reported that even though Google's market share increased to 5.4 percent from 4.2 percent in the third quarter for a market as major as the Western Europe, the buyers are having trouble understanding what it is all about.

"Consumers steer clear of Google's OS and sell-out is below everyone's expectations," said Francisco Jeronimo, an IDC analyst. Android is a fairly alien concept to many users as of yet but it is gaining popularity now as more and more handsets based on it get released.

it has been seen lately that big names in the mobile industry, Motorola, Sony Ericsson and even PC maker Dell have chosen Android for their new high-end smartphones -- such as the Motorola Droid and Sony Ericsson Xperia X10.
"This is expected to change, with more handsets from LG, Samsung, Sony Ericsson, Motorola, and other vendors hitting the market soon," said Jeronimo.

The sales have smartphones has risen 2 percent from the previous quarter, most of this raise backed by the sales of Apple's iPhone and Research in Motion's BlackBerry devices. The number of handsets that have been sold rose at least 5 percent from a year ago to 46.8 million phones in Western Europe.
