Mobile version of Firefox to be launched soon

December 31st, 2009 - 08:56 pm by Wajiha H.
According to the BBC, Mozilla's Jay Sullivan is of the view that the mobile version of the Firefox browser could now be launched anytime soon now as the open source software is going through final testing and so it could be released before the end of this year or the beginning of the next one. The mobile browser, also known as Fennec, will be able to sync with the desktop model. Now the best thing about it is that whatever pages you open in a user's desk top browser, you will automatically get to open those in the mobile version as well.

According to Sullivan, "At the end of the working day you can walk away from your computer and keep on going on your phone, It encrypts all of the information and sends it back through the cloud between your desktop and mobile”. So according to him the software should be ready for downloading by the end of 2009. The first device that will be able to use the browser is the Nokia N900. You will be able to download the mobile Firefox from the Mozilla web page or from Nokia's Ovi store. To top it all some new versions are also being prepared for the Windows Mobile and the Android OS; as Mr. Sullivan has also said , "Apple is very restrictive. As it's a pretty closed platform we don't see that (an iPhone version) happening soon."

The first mobile handset to be equipped with "add-ons" that can easily provide functions like a news reader or other things that will, customize the phone to a large extent. Sullivan says that one won't replace the other and that both the add-ons from the browser and app stores can peacefully "co-exist."
