We all secretly want technology to rule supreme and to make lives more convenient for us in many ways. Now Toshiba has finally made our dream come true to some extent to say but the least. The company has recently launched a device using direct methanol fuel cell (DMFC) called The Dynario, which is basically a charger which is not run on electricity and it can refill the batteries in mobile phones and digital cameras via USB. Fancy that!
![]() These chargers are not available in huge quantities unfortunately, according to reliable sources, only 3,000 units will be offered initially, each costing around £200. Refilling bottles will cost a bit more than that though initially you will be able to get five bottles for free with each charger purchased. This charger is about the same size as a regular mobile phone, although a bit longer around 15 centimeters. It is an expensive buy, at least the first model. It is being expected though that as soon as the amount of these mobiles is increased, the prices will come down eventually. Toshiba has been working on this project for at least six years now and even presented a prototype of the DMFC charger at the Ceatec electronics show in Japan in 2003. The launch date at that time was somewhere in 2005, but it got much later than that. The company has also come up with other prototypes as well, including a DMFC-powered portable media player and a laptop computer. The exact time of the launch was never clear but whenever you asked the officials, it was always next year. But the much awaited charger is finally here. Toshiba doesn’t stop here, now they are planning to go for gadgets with embedded fuel cells and even displayed one of its DMFCs fitted inside a mobile phone! Unfortunately the release date could neither be confirmed by Toshiba nor the Japanese carrier KDDI, which was demonstrating the phone. You can read the whole story here.
