A major firmaware update has been recently released for the N97 Symbian smartphone as promised a while ago by the company. With this you can be rest assured that some basic improvement is going to be seen in user experience and some new applications have been embodied too to make it a better phone in many respects. You can download firmware version 20.0.019 from the company website as it is publicly available now.
firm ware 20.0

System-wide kinetic scrolling is the change that people wanted the most out of the new firmware which is exactly what it gives. This was seen in some of the other Nokia sets as well for example the S60 touch-driven handsets (5530 XpressMusic in particular), N97 had to wait for its turn though.

With the new firmware, the Ovi Maps application has also been updated to version 3.1, it features many 3D maps. Nokia email, Ovi Contacts and Ovi Store have all been integrated in the core system image. Nokia N97 users with the new upgraded firmware also get to have VoIP support and several nice performance upgrades.

Nokia says that with the new improvement that the set has gone through the memory and batter performance should also be a bit better. There should be an improved image and video stability as well. Nokia N97, though a high profiled set, has not been devoid of any shortcomings.

So this improved firmware actually conveys to the users that the company doesn’t forget or ignore its own shortcomings and tries to improve it whenever possible. Nokia has not been doing very nicely with its recent sets, N900 and S60 due to which it was not totally unaccepted for the company to start thinking about improving upon its previous sets somehow.

There has been a video also that is rotating about this new and improved firmware which we find pretty amusing. You can take a look at that video here.
