It has been recently announced by Palm that a lighter, lower-priced smartphone in the same family as its popular Palm Pre smartphone is going to hit the markets soon. This new smartphone is called the Pixi. The Sunnyvale, Calif.-based company has also announced that the Pixi will be launched through Sprint, the exclusive carrier of the Pre, during the holiday season. This will mark the start of Fashion Week in New York.

"The combination of announcing a new device and changing the price on the Pre show we're aggressively pursuing new customers to get them accessing the WebOS experience," said Katie Mitic, Palm's senior vice president of product marketing. The Pixi, running Palm's latest WebOS software, is the company's second attempt to bring down the competition it faces from Apple's iPhone and Research In Motion's BlackBerry devices in the fast-growing smartphone market. The positive point of Pixi is that it’s a bit longer, slimmer and lighter than the Pre and comes with a touch-sensitive bar located between the screen and keyboard.

It also features a QWERTY keyboard, 2.0-megapixel camera, music player, dual speakers and 8GB of built-in memory but not Wi-Fi. It has been noticed though that timing of Palm is extremely odd as the major rival Apple might be focusing on the new iPod Touch features in its next meeting. Then the Palm Pre also launched just days before the iPhone 3Gs. Palm has announced that the new Pixi will finally be launched in the holiday season somewhere but the price would be revealed later.

It is being speculated though that the new Pixie will be much lower priced than the Palm Pre that is somewhere around $99.
