Ontario in Favour of CarTexting Ban

Not a lot of time is left in the banning of the use of hand-held cell phones while driving, by the Ontario Government. It was recently found out in a survey by Angus Reid Strategies on behalf of Sony Ericsson Mobile Communications that almost 90 per cent Ontarions are in favor of the said ban. They are even ready to put their foot down and follow the government's lead but there is a portion of people who is adamant on the use of handheld mobile devices while driving.

Now due to the imposition of this legislation an increase is going to be seen in the prospective sales of hands free devices. Almost twenty-nine per cent of Ontarians expressed the intention to equip themselves with technologies that are more in compliance with the legislation including car speaker phones, wired and wireless headsets in the next three months. It has also been found out that almost one in every five Ontarians currently own at least one form of mobile technology that is compliant with the new law.

Michelle Digulla, General Manager for Sony Ericsson Canada recently said, "Our experience shows that legislation of this sort creates a rush on hands free mobile phone accessories as drivers try to find a solution that fits their needs. We anticipate sales to increase dramatically given our wide range of hands free options and leadership in Bluetooth technology."

According to this latest survey, almost 62 per cent of men strongly agree with the legislation and compared to 76 per cent of women. The age group of 18 to 34 is the most resistant to the prospective legislation with only 14 per cent agreeing. Highest level of support was among people aged 55 plus. People living in the North Ontario have the highest level of compliance with 98 per cent planning on complying with the law. On the other hand, Eastern Ontario has 82 per cent support. 85 per cent of men are aware of this legislation compared to 79 per cent of women.
