Smartphones Gain as Midrange Handsets lose

It can now been seen all over the world that smart phones are taking over. It’s inevitable as nowadays people want more features for their money and not only a calling facility. According to search firm Gartner, users are now more interested in buying high-end smart phones like Apple's iPhone and the BlackBerry from Research in Motion. Gartner also shared that the ordinary mobile phone sales were down 6.1 percent from a year earlier, but there the overall sales in the first quarter have improved over last year.

The sales of smart phones however depict a much different picture. These have increased by at least 27 percent in the same period to 41 million units. According to Gartner’s research director, Corolia Milanesi, "Despite the challenging market, some devices sold well as consumers who would usually have purchased standard midrange devices either cut back to less expensive handsets or moved up the range to get more features for their money. The concern is: how much money will consumers be ready to spend after the economy improves. Has the market been changed forever as regards pricing?" when it comes to mobile phones, no one can beat Nokia; although the overall market share decreased from 39.5 percent last year to 36.8 percent this year. Samsung rose to 19.3 percent from 15.2 percent and LG increased to 10.7 percent from 8.8 percent. Motorola has seen tremendous decrease in its market share however which sank to 5.6 percent from 10 percent. Sony Ericsson has fallen to just 4.7 percent from 7.5 percent.
